WIN 3.x (IMG) Guide

1.) Download DosBox-x Builds from Github

Download Dosbox-x from their github-page, from here. Some, but not all of the "Important Files" from darktravels homepage.

To this date, DOSBox-X 0.83.3 is the last release.

2.) Download DosBox-x Builds from Github

Download he configuration file from github here. It does not need any configurations.

Move the file to the same folder as dosbox-x.exe

3.) Create a Hard Disk image

Download from darktable and extract by opening the file, rename the extracted file to "windows.img" and put it in the same folder as dosbox-x.exe

Darktables 4GB Disk Image →

Or use this version, it does not need to be formated, contains 1 gb and 4 gb image!

4.) MS-Dos Download

Download MS-DOS, it might work with later and earlier version, but this is the one I have tested. Extract the files and put it in the same folder as Dosbox-x, all three floppy image (disk1, disk2, disk3)

5.) Add to dosbox.conf

Add this lines to dosbox:

imgmount 2 windows.img -size 512,63,255,522 -t hdd -fs none
imgmount 0 "Disk1.img" "Disk2.img" "Disk3.img" -t floppy -fs none
boot -l a

6.) Install MS-Dos 6.0

Start dosbox and follow the instruction, It will ask you to put in disk 1 and restart, just close dosbox-x and open it again and it will log in and format the hard drive. Then follow the rest of the installation.

It will also ask you to change the disk, just click on the "DOS"-menu and choose "Swap floppy" and press Enter to continue.

7.) Extract Windows 3.x

Extract all files from the floppy into a folder called "WIN3"

8.) Transfer the Installation files

ImDisk works like magic when transfering files. Only to remember to always have Dosbox-x closed when using it to transfer and access the image file, and always wait a few seconds after the last transfered file has completed before ejecting it. (always eject before open with dosbox-x or it could get corrupted.

1. Install by opening the cmd-file.
2. Open the program from the start menu.
3. Locate the disk img file (in this case win9x.img) and press "OK". And now it will open the disk image in file manager.

9.) Transfer the WIN3 folder

When you have mounted the windows.img, transfer the WIN3 Folder to it.

You might also transfer files for graphic and sound drivers (watch part 18 to download)

10.) Eject

Eject the mounted image, by right-click and choose unmount or what it might be called in english. Then press OK.

11.) Edit Dosbox.conf again

Change boot -l a to:

boot -l c     #This will boot into c:

12.) Install win 3.x

Open Dosbox-x and write:

cd WIN3
install

13.) Installing Windows

Just follow the setup.

14.) After installation

After it has installed it will restart and boot into ms-dos again. To make it start into windows 3.x automatic you need to do one more thing, watch next step.

15.) Add "WIN"

To make it boot into windows automatic, you need to add one thing to autoexec.bat, type this line into dosbox:

edit autoexec.bat         #Press Enter

Now go to the end and add a new line:

WIN

To save, press the "ALT"-button, and the down-key to get down the "File"-menu, and press Enter on "Save" (Or press "S").
Press "ALT" again and down and go to "Exit" (Or press "X").

16.) Restart Dosbox-x

Restart Dosbox-x and now you will be booted into Windows 3.x

17.)

Multiple Disk-images

Just in case I do not edit and transfer files from and to the Windows-image in case it would be corrupted. So I create new images from the 4gb-file and formating them (watch step 9). Change the name on every new image-file you create, and in the config-file just add them like this:

imgmount 3 disk1.img -size 512,63,255,522 -t hdd -fs none
imgmount 4 disk2.img -size 512,63,255,522 -t hdd -fs none
imgmount 5 disk3.img -size 512,63,255,522 -t hdd -fs none

I do also backup the "windows-image" just in case before installing addons, programs or changing settings.

18.) Graphics and Sound

Download "S3" drivers and "Sound Blaster 16". Transfer the files.

19.)

Enjoy

Now its done. For extra installations, programs and similar, visit

What I have notice about calmira is that its (well amazing) but have some bugs and is not always stable. Its also very hard to uninstall, so make a backup of the "C" folder where win3X is located if messing around with calmira.
